Garlic

You might not realize that some of the food in your refrigerator has the healing power of any over-the-counter medication you might find at a pharmacy. Here just some super-foods that have the ability to fight a whole host of problems ranging from weight gain to serious illnesses like cancer.

- Garlic: According to this month’s issue of Woman’s World, garlic has the ability to block weight gain. According to the Journal of Nutrition, the sulfur compound in garlic stops fats cells from developing in their infancy to fully formed ones. Garlic is also well-known for its coronary benefits: garlic combats high blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, coronary heart disease, heart attack, and atherosclerosis. Garlic has also been shown to increase activity of immunity-building cells.

- Blueberries: Stop popping that aspirin; blueberries contain salicylic acid, also known as Mother Nature’s aspirin, yet they do not pose all of the potential risks of taking pharmaceutical aspirin. Blueberries have the highest antioxidant content of any berry, making them a fearsome opponent of cancers, neurological disorders, or even just the common cold. In addition, these powerful berries also have the power to protect your eyes, according to the British Journal of Medicine. The anthocyanins protect the retina from harmful free radicals. But that’s not all: blueberries also help burn belly fat. According to a 2009 article published in Science Daily, a University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center study demonstrates the blueberry’s fat-burning capacity. Button Mushrooms: Researchers at Arizona State University tested the effects of button mushrooms on the heart’s artery cells. The results of their study, published in the July 2010 issue of Nutrition Journal, show that button mushrooms reduce inflammation in arterial cells and prevent white blood cells from sticking to arterial walls. In addition to helping to protect the heart, mushrooms help reduce one’s cancer risk by up to 64 per cent, according to the renowned Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of, Eat to Live. Red Chili Peppers: According to Natural News, the cayenne that is in chili peppers is responsible for reducing blood pressure. Not only that, red hot chili peppers serve are an effective digestive aid and have been proven to reduce allergy symptoms with its anti-inflammatory properties.

Salmon: Recent studies show that the omega 3 fatty acids found in fish helps prevent osteo-arthritis, as the oils contain strong anti-inflammatory properties. Aim to eat 3 six-ounce servings a week. Don’t eat fish? Then, take one gram of burp-free fish oil daily in supplement form.
